Welcome to Augustyn short leg, wire haired Jack Russells! We are Jacques & Wilna Augustyn, breeders of these exceptional dogs. We are located close to Malmesbury in the Western Cape of South Africa.

Short leg, wired hair Jack Russells were originally bred in England in the 19th century for hunting foxes both above and below ground.  Nowadays they are working and companion dogs.  Their personality and temperament is lively, alert, active, notoriously fearless, happy and with intelligent expression.

This breed makes superior watchdogs.  They are alert and often used with larger dogs for security purposes. They are very compatible with most other dogs. This is a natural hunting breed and should be properly introduced to other pets in the household.  They can be noisy ONLY when they are bored and without stimulation.

Jack Russells are excellent with people and especially children.  Elderly people need to understand their energetic nature. They are equally comfortable indoors and outdoors.  As all pets they prefer indoors, but typically do not spend the day on the couch. They should be allowed to be in close contact with their human “family”.

Little grooming is required. Brushing is recommended twice a week.  The broken and rough coat dogs do not shed as much hair as the smooth coats.

Jack Russell Terriers are not pure bred in the sense that they have a broad genetic make-up,  a broad standard, and do not breed true to type.  They can be smooth, broken or rough coated.  Although we strive to only breed broken and rough coats the genetics of the breed is such that we sometimes (rarely) produce a smooth coat puppy.  This is mainly consequence of the use of a smooth coat sire many generations back to get the coat less fluffy.  As breeders we cannot predict if a pup that was born smooth will develop wire later.  The coat can turn wire at 6 months or even older.

Jack Russell puppies are small and very active, so expect a very playful pup.  They also grow quickly and usually reach their adult height by 10 months, and their adult weight by 12 months.   A full grown Jack Russell measuring 25-38 cm at the withers (shoulder) and weighs 6-12 kg.
